From one year to the next, the need for a space to work from home has become a worldwide trend. Today, architects and interior designers face the challenge of creating living spaces that not only fulfill family functions, but also allow members to develop their work activities in a comfortable, efficient, and, of course, ergonomic way.

Adapting a home office space in a house or apartment that was not planned for that purpose can be a challenge, but don’t worry, because today we will give you 7 very useful tips for you to select the ideal corner and adapt it in the best way. Ready?

Tip number one: Purge

Purge? Yes. Choosing and setting up an environment to work from home will be infinitely easier if, before anything else, you take the time to go through every corner looking for all those things and furniture that you don’t really use or need anymore. After a thorough purge, you will see how closets and corners suddenly have much more free space, and that freedom allows you to make better decisions when setting up your workplace.

You may even find useful things that have been gathering dust in the back of closets, or you may determine that a piece of furniture is no longer useful in a certain room, but would go great in your new office, or would make a great desk with a few simple adaptations. Purifying also allows you to refresh the energy throughout your home for this new phase, so start there.

Tip number two: Look at the lighting.

It can be very tempting to occupy a forgotten corner to set up a home office, but consider that these are usually very closed spaces in which there is not much light or ventilation. Rather, start your search by looking directly through the windows, that is, set up the workstation next to a wall that is illuminated, but indirectly, most of the day.

An excellent investment you can make in this regard is a good dimmable light bulb, there are even some that allow you to set warm or cool light, depending on what you need.

Tip number three: Find the ideal temperature

The reason why indirect natural lighting is so important is that it keeps a place warm but without overheating it, as would happen if the sun came directly. On the other hand, it is also best to avoid corridors where cold air currents are very intense, thus reducing the need for air conditioning and heating.

Tip number four: delimit your space

It is not about building a concrete wall between your new office and the rest of the house, but you should include some elements to delimit that this is a different area and keep it free of distractions. There are thousands of options, from a screen to a bookcase wall, or, if you want something a little more original, you can make a half wall of drywall or glass block. The important thing is that you don’t “lock yourself in” but that there is no doubt that this is a workstation.

If you live in a very noisy environment, also consider that materials such as cork and cardboard derivatives are very good auditory insulation.

Tip number five: use colors that match your profession

Some professionals need a high level of concentration during work, while others need motivation, energy, and creativity instead. Different colors evoke different moods, so think about what mood you are most productive in, and choose a color palette that matches that need.

Either way, remember that for a spacious, bright, and pleasant atmosphere it is always best to use neutral base colors and accents in brighter tones.

Tip number six: Invest in ergonomics

Before you buy a chair or desk that looks great, make sure it is also very comfortable and will allow you to work for hours without causing back pain or other discomfort. Investing in an ergonomic keyboard is also a great idea. Remember that comfort and design can always coexist, but if you have to choose, comfort always comes first.

Tip number seven: Ventilation, sound and some life

Finally, don’t forget to promote air quality by keeping your office near to a ventilation point. Plants are also a little help in clearing the environment of co2, even if their main function is decorative and calming.
