Some tiles follow trends; fishscale tile starts them. The scallop shape — also called mermaid tile — turns flat walls and floors into surfaces with movement, and our new fishscale collection brings it in hand-poured cement tile: eight colors, in stock, shipping from Laredo, TX. This is the complete guide to choosing it, placing it and installing it.
What makes the scallop special
The fishscale breaks the grid. Instead of straight grout lines marching across the wall, the curves overlap like scales, and light plays across the surface differently through the day. It reads organic and hand-made — which, in our case, it literally is: each scallop is poured and pressed individually, pigment through the body.
FS-120 Aqua: the water tone that made fishscale famous, doing its best work in a bathroom.
Where to use it
Shower walls and bathrooms: the natural habitat — scallops plus water tones equal instant spa. Kitchen backsplashes: a few square feet of scallop outclass most full renovations. Bars and restaurant walls: the texture guests photograph. Floors: yes — it is cement tile, with the same durability as our classic formats.
FS-324 Charcoal in a kitchen: the moody neutral that makes brass and wood glow.
The color range
Eight colorways, from quiet to statement: white and charcoal for the neutral camp; aqua, turquoise, sky blue and deep blue for the water story; verde canadá for the green wave; salmon for the unexpected warm. Dark tones emphasize the scallop outline; light tones read as subtle texture.
On a bar front, the scallop works commercial hours without complaint.
Installation notes
Fishscale installs on standard thinset like any cement tile, with two scallop-specific rules: plan the orientation first (scales pointing down is classic; up reads more floral), and order 10% extra for the cut rows at edges. Count your coverage with How Many Tiles Do I Need?, and pick a grout close to the tile tone so the shape, not the grid, is the star — more on that in our upcoming grout pairing guide.
